Contoh Hortatory Exposition Text dan Generic Structure
Contoh 1: School should allow student cell phone usage
Thesis: As of now, students are not permitted to have cell phones during the school day. This prevents communication during emergency situations.
With not a lot of freedom in place in the school already, phones are just one more thing that is taken away from students. It’s important to have a source of communication to assure one’s safety. Teens are living in an age when things can get pretty scary; having a family member or friend to call in case of an emergency will not only help the students but possibly save them.
Arguments: Emergencies are just one of the many factors that apply. Brothers and sisters who attend the school together might need help locating one other for a various number of reasons during the day.
Many teachers and staff members don’t like the idea of phones being in classes because they believe it will cause a distraction. To combat with this, rules will be placed in order to keep electronics off when there is teaching or working being conducted.
The main rules would include: no electronics on when teaching unless prompted, do not distract other classmates with the device, phones will sit on the front desk when testing and the ringer must be off at all times. Consequences will vary depending on the students actions.

Recommendation: At the end of the day, it only matters if students obey the rules of carrying their phones around. There is only one way to figure out if it’s an idea that can work and that is to let students have them.

Contoh 2: Schools should walk line with pros and cons of cellphones
Thesis: Cellphones are a great tool. If you have a smartphone in your pocket, you have more than just a way to call home. You can take a picture or make a video. You can send an email or read a book. A smartphone is an encyclopedia and a calculator, a ruler and a compass, a mirror and a flashlight, a television and a magnifying glass, and infinitely more.
Arguments: They can be addictive. They can be distracting. They can be loud. They can also spark competition. Do you have the latest? The most fashionable? The most functional? The most expensive?
They can disrupt dinner tables and movies. They are restricted on airplanes and can be limited at hospitals.
And so it’s not surprising that schools are struggling with how to handle them in the classroom. While the age when someone gets their first phone varies by family or child, Pew Research Center says 96% of students high school age or younger have cellphones.
Some schools embrace this. Kids will have the phones, so why not integrate them into lessons? Why ask parents to buy expensive scientific calculators when a $1 app can serve the same purpose? Why can’t the camera be used to make movies for presentations or take pictures for slide shows?
Some try to limit the temptations. Schools in United States will use a tool of magnetic locks to prevent access to phones during the day. Others are more low-tech, requiring kids to turn phones off or stow them away at the start of class.
Recommendation: Schools should absolutely have a way to keep control and teach kids how to do math without the calculator app. However, maybe that control should stop short of preventing calls home until we are better at keeping violence locked out of schools.

Contoh 3: Is fast food to blame for the obesity problem?
Thesis: Eating fast food regularly isn’t good for your health. However, eaten in moderation, fast food is just fine and should not be blamed for the nation’s obesity problem.
Arguments: Our society is getting fatter, but I don’t think our eating habits are completely to blame. We are lazy, plain and simple.
We live in a fast-paced world of technology where everything is available to us without manual labor and we take full advantage of not having to work for ourselves. Fast food offers us a quick and easy fix. But it shouldn’t be that way.
Fast food could easily be blamed for the nation’s obesity problem because of the fattening menu choices. The real problem lies within people. Most people are too caught up with their daily schedules or too lazy to make a real meal for themselves. They would rather take the easy way out. Unfortunately, the easy way isn’t healthy.
Technology is great thing, but it is also the number one factor in our laziness and it leads to obesity. With each new advancement, people become too dependent and more lazy.
So, if you truly want to enjoy fast food without the fattening consequences, some lifestyle changes have to be made. Being lazy and relying on technology for everything will only hurt your health.
Our society demands a fast pace. There is not enough time to sit down and enjoy a real meal so, too often, people turn to fast food establishments for their meals. But most don’t realize that eating fast food while continuing to live in a fast-paced world or leading lazy lives will inevitably cause weight gain.
Recommendation: Everyone needs to quit relying on technology for everything and slow down. Take time to exercise and eat something healthy.
We need to set a good example for the next generation, making sure that they learn to balance eating healthy and living in a fast-paced, technological world.

Contoh 4: Social media is hurting kids. Why hasn’t government stepped in?
Thesis: Social media have so many alarming effect to the mental health of young users, who reported feeling addicted to scrolling images on the app even though it made them feel bad about themselves or, in some cases, promoted eating disorders and self-harm.
But it pursued engaging teenagers as key to growing its profits.
Arguments: Serious mental health problems among high school students skyrocketed during the same decade that teens’ use of cellphones and social media became pervasive.
From 2009 to 2019, the portion of high schoolers reporting “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” increased by 40%, to more than 1 in 3 students, according to the U.S. surgeon general’s advisory last year on the national crisis in youth mental health. During the same decade, the number considering suicide shot up 36% — to about 1 in 5 high schoolers.
The effect of technology “almost certainly varies from person to person,” the surgeon general’s report says, citing research that shows both negative and positive consequences of teens’ social media use.
While some research shows time spent online leads to depression and anxiety, other research shows it helps people form meaningful connections with friends and family.
More recent research has shown that social media platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat, have made it easy for teenagers to find and buy deadly drugs, such as pills laced with fentanyl.
Recommendation: Government should keep the pressure on to make protection of children and teenager from the danger of social media.
Government and relevant authorities should establish the law against the bad impact of social media.
