Narrative text adalah salah satu jenis teks penting dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris, yang menceritakan rangkaian peristiwa dengan sistem kronologis atau saling terhubung.
Narrative text umumnya bersifat imajinatif, alias tidak nyata atau berupa hasil imajinasi dari penulisnya.
Language feature atau ciri kebahasaan dalam narrative text adalah:
1. Menceritakan peristiwa di masa lampau, yang menggunakan past tenses.
2. Terdapat penggunaan adjective (kata sifat).
3. Terdapat time transition atau perubahan waktu.
4. Umumnya adalah cerita imajinatif atau tidak nyata, termasuk legenda, fabel, dan mitos.
Contoh Narrative Text Singkat
1. Rock with The Holes

Orientation:
Once upon a time, a poor farmer had a son. The farmer sent his son to school to study and become a successful man.
The farmer's son felt himself very stupid. He could not study well and often failed exams.
Complication:
Desperate, the farmer's son gave up and went home. On the way, it rained. The farmer's son took shelter in a hut.
In front of him was a rock with a hole at the top. The farmer's son was amazed, "Why does that hard rock have holes?"
It turned out that the hole in the rock was caused by raindrops that always fall on the rock every time it rains.
The farmer's son realized that a hard rock could have holes if water kept dripping on it.
Resolution:
The stone was like him, while the water was like knowledge. If the farmer's son gains knowledge little by little without stopping, he was sure that he will master that knowledge.

Once upon a time, on the island of Lombok, there lived a wise king and his beautiful daughter named Putri Mandalika.
Because Princess Mandalika was very beautiful, many princes asked her to be a wife.
Complication:
The princess did not want to disappoint the princes and her people, she meditated in a seaside cave to ask the gods for help.
After meditating for a long time, Princess Mandalika returned to see her father.
The princess said, "If I accept the proposal of one of the princes, it will create enmity among the princes. I don't want to marry those princes and I choose to devote myself to the gods."
Resolution:
The next day, Princess Mandalika threw herself into the sea. It is said that his body turned into a colorful worm in the Lombok sea.
The worm was called nyale. People of Lombok have ancient tradition called Bau Nyale that they gather nyale annually.

3. Rose and Lily
Orientation:
Once upon a time, there lived a widow who had two daughters. Her stepdaughter was named Lily, and her biological daughter was named Rosa.
Lily was a diligent and kind child, while Rosa was a lazy and rude child.
Complication:
One day, Lily went shopping through the orchard, she found an apple tree where all the fruit had ripened and fell off.
Lily also picked up the apples from the ground, then knocked on the apple owner's house. The owner of the house who was a kind old witch was very grateful for Lily's help.
She asked Lily "What do you wish? I will grant your wish." Lily replied, "I'll be happy with whatever you give me."
The old witch gave Lily a large box filled with gold coins. Lily came home and told her stepmother and stepsisters about it.
Out of jealousy, Rosa came to the old witch's house. She said "You have given Lily a gold coin. Now give it to me."
The old witch swung her wand. Instead of gold, the wand spat out a stinking mud that covered Rosa all over.

Resolution:
Said the witch, "The smell of this mud will not go away, unless you become a good and diligent girl."
Rose went home sad and sorry. She learnt her mistakes and turns into a kind girl to everyone.
4. The Arrogant Milk
Orientation:
In the refrigerator, there are various vegetables, fruits, cakes, various foods, and a bottle of milk.
The bottle of milk is very arrogant and likes to make fun of other foods.
Complication:
The bottle of milk said, "I am the one who has more nutrients than any other food."
The milk also ridiculed fruits and vegetables, "I am more nutritious and purer than fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are grown in dirty soil."
The milk then mocked the bread, "You bread, everything is mixed up and disgusting."

She asked the other animal and birds on the farm, "Who wants to plant this wheat grain?". The duck, Cat, and the goose were lazy and quickly refused to do any work.

Resolution:
The duck, cat and the goose stood close thinking that they too would get a share.
But the little Red hen refused to give the share and said, "I will eat my bread alone as I did all the work." She called her chicks and they all had a feast.
6. The Greedy Dog
Orientation:
Once, there was a dog searching for food. It got a bone from a meat shop. The dog took the bone and went towards its house. It reached at the bridge of the river which was near his house.
Complication:
The dog saw his image in the water and mistook that some other dog is there in the water with a bone in its mouth. The greedy dog made a plan to snatch away the bone from the other dog. It opened the mouth for snatching away the bone. Alas!, the bone in its mouth fell down in the river.
Resolution:
The poor dog lost its bone and went home crying. He regretted that he was so greedy.
