Narrative text merupakan salah satu jenis teks Bahasa Inggris dalam bentuk karangan atau cerita hasil imajinasi. Umumnya, teks ini memiliki tujuan untuk menghibur dan menyampaikan pesan moral atau moral values pada pembaca. Salah satu gaya bahasanya adalah narrative text ditulis dalam past tenses.

Narrative text memiliki struktur yakni orientasi (orientation), komplikasi (complication), resolusi (resolution), dan reorientasi (re-orientation). Agar membantu teman-teman memahami konsep gramatik past tenses, berikut ini adalah pembahasan soal Grammar Excercise Task 1 halaman 189 buku Bahasa Inggris kelas 10.

Past Perfect Tense

Pada halaman 183, kita menemukan narrative text berjudul Strong Wind yang memiliki contoh salah satu past tenses, berupa past perfect tense.

Past perfect tense digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi telah selesai pada suatu titik di masa lalu sebelum aksi lainnya terjadi.

Rumus past perfect tense yang perlu diingat adalah:

1. Kalimat positif: Subject + had + verb3/ past participle

2. Kalimat negatif: Subject + had + not + verb3/ past participle

3. Kalimat tanya: Had + subject + verb3/ past participle

2. John ________________ (repair) many cars before he received his mechanic’s license.

Answer: John had repaired many cars before he received his mechanic’s license.

3. She ________________ (never see) jackfruit before she came to Indonesia.

Answer: She had never seen jackfruit before she came to Indonesia.

4. Marie _____________ (feel) bad about selling her car because she _________________ ( own) it for ten years.

Answer: Marie had felt bad about selling her car because she _________________ ( own) it for ten years.

5. We ____________________ (understand) the movie because we ________________ (read) the book about it.

Answer: We understood the movie because we had read the book about it.

6. Kamal ___________________ (study) about Germany before he _______________ (go) there for his university education.

Answer: Kamal had studied about Germany before he went there for his university education.

7. I did not have any money to buy food because I __________(loose) my wallet.

Answer: I did not have any money to buy food because I had lost my wallet.

8. Ahmad ______________ (never be) to Mecca before last week trip to Masjidil Haram.

Answer: Ahmad had never been to Mecca before last week trip to Masjidil Haram.

9. We could not get a hotel room last night because we ____________(not book) in advance.

Answer: We could not get a hotel room last night because we hadn't booked in advance. 

10. We were not welcome by the family because we _____________(not make) a telephone call  telling them that we would come last night.

Answer: We were not welcome by the family because we hadn't made a telephone call telling them that we would come last night.
